This situation particularly affects the inhabitants of Dhaka, where lack of sun exposure and insufficient milk consumption worsen the problem. The affected individuals are on average 42 years old and share similar lifestyle habits, such as sedentary work or a physically inactive lifestyle.

Chronic lower back pain is characterized by persistent discomfort in the lower back, which can radiate to the legs and limit movement. It is often accompanied by sleep disorders, anxiety, or depression, and affects millions of people worldwide. Among the possible causes are vertebral disc injuries, osteoarthritis, or a lack of vitamin D, which is essential for bone and muscle health.

In this study conducted in Dhaka, researchers observed that patients with vitamin D deficiency had slightly higher pain scores than others. Their nutritional status was also poorer, with more frequent weight loss and a body mass index that was often too low or too high. However, despite these findings, no direct relationship was established between vitamin D deficiency and the intensity of pain, degree of disability, or malnutrition.

Several factors increase the risk of deficiency: sun exposure of less than one hour per day, low consumption of milk or fatty fish, a high body mass index, smoking, or lack of regular physical activity. These elements highlight the importance of lifestyle habits in preventing deficiencies, even in a sunny country like Bangladesh, where pollution and sedentary lifestyles reduce the skin’s synthesis of vitamin D.

The results show that vitamin D deficiency is common among people suffering from chronic lower back pain, but it does not appear to directly worsen their condition. However, it remains associated with lifestyles that are not conducive to overall good health.

Sources

About This Study

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1186/s12982-026-02327-w

Title: Pain, nutritional status, and disability status among chronic low back pain patients with vitamin d deficiency in Dhaka, Bangladesh: a cross-sectional study

Journal: Discover Public Health

Publisher: Springer Science and Business Media LLC

Authors: Muhammad Shahidul Islam; Mohammad Sohrab Hossain; K.
